How charities and personal sites can make their work easier to understand: clear authorship, sourced facts and realistic expectations about AI search.

In brief

An AI answer may be someone’s first encounter with your work. Clear authorship, readable pages and sourced facts make a site easier to understand and check. They do not guarantee an AI citation. This note explains the editorial choices behind this personal record, including why its optional machine-readable copies should agree with the pages people read.

## What changed about the front door?

For twenty years the front door of every organisation was the same: ten blue links on a results page. That era is ending. Increasingly, the first interaction a person has with your work is not a visit to your website — it is an answer, synthesised by a machine, delivered in a single paragraph, with your name either inside it or absent from it.

This matters for charities. Someone asking an answer engine _where should I give for earthquake relief?_ needs to be able to check the organisations and evidence behind the answer. Clear pages and sourced claims help readers do that. Whether any particular system selects a site as a source is a separate question.

The same is true of a personal record. If the homepage, structured data and downloadable copies disagree on a figure, they leave conflicting accounts for anyone consulting them. Consistency is the job.

## What is answer engine optimisation, without the jargon?

Answer engine optimisation is a label used for making content easier to discover and understand in AI answers. My approach starts with the reader:

- **Give each page a clear purpose.** A short opening should help a reader decide whether the page answers their question.
- **Be precise about the record.** Name the role, date and source so a reader can distinguish a personal recollection from a documented fact.
- **Keep facts consistent** across names, dates, figures and biographies. Correct conflicting copies when the underlying record changes.
- **Make the page easy to navigate.** Use descriptive headings, accessible tables where useful, and structured data that reflects the visible content.
- **Offer useful formats.** This site publishes optional Markdown copies and a small [open data](/open-data) package for people who want to reuse or inspect the record.
- **Source the numbers.** A DEC total without a DEC URL is a rumour with a pound sign.

## What should a charity say first?

Who you are, what you fund, and where you work. That is useful context for a visitor arriving from any source. There is no special word count that earns an AI citation.

## What does a personal site owe the same machines?

Identity, stated plainly. The [DEC explained note](/notes/dec-appeals-explained) holds the arithmetic. The [events](/events) page holds the archive. Programme questions belong with the organisations that run the programmes.

## Does a site need an llms.txt file?

Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same SEO foundations as Search: there are no extra requirements, special AI text files or special schema needed. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. That guidance applies to Google’s features; other services may work differently. [Source: Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features).

This site’s `llms.txt` and Markdown copies are publishing choices, not a proven route to better rankings or citations. They are generated from the built pages to reduce conflicting versions.

The intended policy on this domain is: search yes, AI input yes, AI training yes, with attribution.

## What is this note for?

A briefing on making a personal record easier to read, verify and cite. The example is the domain you are on.

I have worked in digital marketing long enough to have watched several of these shifts arrive. My priority remains the same: publish something useful, make it understandable, and make sure the numbers match their sources.
